COUNCILLORS feel like they are ‘banging their heads against a brick wall’ following concerns over cycling on pavements.

At their monthly meeting, Shotton councillors were urged to contact North Wales Police for any incidents relating to police matters.

Cllr Sean Bibby confirmed he had a meeting with local PCSO Dave Huxley who said an additional PCSO will be joining him to increase patrols but calls to 101 are needed to ensure they know where to go.

Cllr Mike Evans raised concerns over irresponsible cyclists after a resident was knocked over when walking his dog.

He said: “The lead got tangled in the bike. Later on that day, near Bargain Booze, his wife nearly got knocked over, it’s not a story, it’s not made up, someone is going to get seriously hurt.

“It feels like we are banging out head on a brick wall. It feels like Shotton is getting neglected.

“There’s been items on here for eight years and we are still talking about them now. We need to push and push and push because residents expect us to take action.”

Cllr Gillian Brockley, chair of the council, urged members to report instances like this to the police.

Cllr Gary Cooper added: “I want to respond to what councillor Evans said about this council banging our heads against a brick wall, I disagree. We have worked hard over the last 15 years.

“We have done everything we can, we have a duty of care, but it is a police responsibility. To sit there and say we are not doing anything, I take offence.

“The person that got knocked over did he report it to the police? He shouldn’t be calling you; you should be telling him to call police.

“Residents are up in arms about it. I have spoken to people and they appreciate what this town council is doing. I don’t expect a response, I don’t want one.”

The Leader has previously reported concerns over cycling on pavements across Shotton and Connah’s Quay.

Cllr Evans said the resident did not call the police due to the long waiting times for 101.

He said: “You can twist your words, but I actually said residents look at us to do something. We are doing our best, but it looks like we are banging our heads against a wall sometimes.”
