A WEEK to recognise hard working volunteers has been welcomed by an MP.

Susan Elan Jones MP has met with representatives of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations in Parliament to mark Volunteers’ Week.

The Clwyd South MP, who is Co-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Charities and Volunteering, said:

“This year’s Volunteers’ Week will be held between June 1 to 7. Volunteers do so much in our communities so I’m delighted we have a national week to celebrate their contribution to society.

“Recent research has shown that more than three-quarters of volunteers say that volunteering improves their mental health and well-being, and 96 per cent of people who volunteer say they are satisfied with their volunteering experience. These statistics show how beneficial it is to become a volunteer.

“I’d like to thank everyone in our local area who volunteers. I’d also like to pay tribute to our superb local voluntary sector councils, AVOW in Wrexham county borough and DVSC in Denbighshire.”

Susan Elan Jones MP is also promoting volunteering by trying to get new legislation passed in Parliament that would help more people become charity trustees.

The Clwyd South MP was recently joined by representatives of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations and the Small Charities Coalition in a meeting with Charities Minister Mims Davies MP to discuss her proposals.
