VULNERABLE residents have been warned to be vigilant after a bogus caller tried to gain access to an elderly woman's property.

Hermitage Councillor Graham Rogers has also asked people to look out for their elderly neighbours after the incident, which happened in Percy Road in Hightown.

A man told the resident he was a window cleaner from the council, but she refused to let him in and checked with the council who confirmed he was not an employee.

Cllr Rogers said: "I'm advising my constituents in Hermitage of the consequences of letting bogus callers access their properties as an incident has occurred this week with someone under the pretence of a council employee, and the reason given he was there to clean the inside windows of the property.

"Luckily the elderly lady refused access and contacted the council who were able to confirm he was not an employee.

"I would like to remind everyone in Hermitage to be vigilant and on their guard when being approached by a person of work that they intended doing, always ask for ID and if any doubt contact Wrexham Council or ring 101 to explain what has occurred."

Wales Trading Standards also issue advice to those who may be targeted by ruthless rogue traders or distraction burglars

A spokesman said: "The message is simple - 'If In Doubt, Keep Them Out'.

"Also, never be afraid to report anyone who is suspicious to the police. To report, you should call: 101 to report a suspected rogue trader, or 999 if a rogue trader has taken money from you and is in your home or still in the local area.

"You should also call 999 if you think someone is a distraction burglar.

"We all need to report any activity from these callers. Just because a potential rogue trader or distraction burglar leaves your doorstep, it doesn't mean that they won't target other people in your community.

"Please always tell the olice about any 'suspicious characters' who may be cold calling at people's properties."
