A MAN'S body has been discovered in the River Mersey near Birkenhead.

Emergency services were called at around 6.10am today (Wednesday, May 22) to Monks Ferry following reports of a body in the water.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Enquiries are ongoing to identify the man and notify his next of kin.

His death is not believed to be suspicious.

A police spokeswoman said: "Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and the Coastguard attended and the man was confirmed deceased at the scene.

"Enquiries are ongoing to identify the man, notify his next of kin, and establish the cause of his death."
