A SCHOOL in Holywell has held several celebrations to mark a milestone birthday.

Pupils from Ysgol Gwenffrwd mark its seventieth birthday after opening its doors in 1949 with only eight pupils as the first Welsh school in the county.

On Thursday, May 16, almost 200 chidlren took to the High Street of Holywell to enjoy a sing along to their favourite Jambori songs with Martyn Geraint, proving that the Welsh language is very much alive in this corner of Wales.

Alys Williams, headteacher, said: “This was a day to remember. I would like to pass on my thanks to past pupils and staff for calling in to see us too and celebrating the school’s history.”

The day was followed with a performance by the Welsh Whisperer who visited the school before Easter to work with the children to compose a song to celebrate the school's birthday.

Also, Dr Gareth Roberts, one of the first 8 pupils, returned to the school as a guest speaker.
