A DEESIDE man is to take on the highest mountain in north Africa in memory of his mum and for charity.

Robert Gaine, from Shotton, is trekking 13,000ft up the Toubkal in Morocco.

He is undertaking the feat in aid of the Amelia-Mae Foundation, named after a two-year-old who died in 2013 from Neuroblastoma - a rare type of cancer affecting young children and babies.

Mr Gaine has been fundraising for 10 years following the death of his mum, Kathleen Ann Gaine, following a battle with cancer.

He travels to Morocco's Atlas Mountain Range this Friday, and anticipates the hike will take five days to complete.

Mr Gaine said: "Doing things like this make my mum's memory live on and her being a foster carer and a cherished member of the community was what we will never forget her for.

"She will always be with me while helping others fight a battle no one should ever be in.

"If I can do something to help someone, no matter how big or small, that's all I want to do."

Mr Gaine, a talented boxer, has undertaken other fundraising activities, like walking the length of the Great Wall of China, but admits this is the first time he will be going it alone.

He added: "I've done the Great Wall of China with mates, but this is the first time I'm going to be doing it by myself.

"I'm really looking forward to the challenge."

Mr Gaine has already raised £1,700 for the Amelia Mae Foundation, and you can donate to his appeal at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/robert-gaine?fbclid=IwAR3u8mdtzHo0D8xmXJTZmGnqn37jbFUaCuz5ysiL-C-yoJy5oYVEWZkmX1g&utm_source=Whatsapp
