A SCHOOL cheerleading team is preparing for a national competition following a recent win.

Ysgol Bryn Gwalia's year five and six cheerleading team took part in Buckley Cheerleading Club's Cheerfest event at Deeside Leisure Centre on Sunday.

The team, called the Bryn Gwalia Sharks, won the years five and six pom dance and is now preparing for its next big contest.

Maria Kennedy, office manager and cheerleading coach at the Mold-based school, said: "They did one performance as part of Cheerfest and we were so proud of them.

"It was a fantastic day and such a well organised event.

"I would recommend all schools take part in it.

"Cheerleading promotes good sportsmanship and encouragement of other teams and it is great for building confidence.

"Next, they're entering the UK Cheerleading Association national schools championships at the the Manchester Velodrome on June 22 so they're all practicing.

Mrs Kennedy, who coaches the team alongside fellow staff member Louise Allen, added: "They have worked hard and they really enjoy themselves."

Dilwyn Jones, head teacher, praised the team for their success, adding: "A big thanks to Miss Allen and Mrs Kennedy for their work in coaching the team."
