A TOWN'S youngest councillor has resigned.

Buckley Town Council announced a vacancy for a councillor in the Buckley Mountain ward following the resignation of Labour Councillor Sam Peers on May 10.

Mr Peers, 24, told the Leader he thoroughly enjoyed his time in the role and wanted to see more young people enter politics.

He said: "Due to personal circumstances, I have not been able to have the time to commit to my role to the extent the residents of the ward need from their representatives.

"I became a councillor in May 2017 and I was the youngest member there at 22.

"It has been an honour and a privilege and I think I have managed to pack quite a few things in.

"I am particularly proud of the part I played in knocking back an application for housing near Elfed High School.

"There was a big concern from residents and that was my old school so it was very personal to me.

"I have also be very proud to represent the younger generation and I am glad I went for it.

"I think younger people are underrepresented in politics.

"It's a great thing for young people to do and I would love to see more get involved."

Cllr Peers, who is a caseworker, added: "Having grown up and spent all my life in Buckley, It has been great to play that part for the community.

"I have enjoyed speaking with people and engaging with the community, even if it is just through small events like litter picking and things to brighten up the area."

Now that the vacancy has been announced, residents of the Buckley Mountain ward have 14 days (until June 3) to request an election.

That request must be made by ten electors to the returning officer in order for there to be an election.

If no request is made the town council must, as soon as practicable after the expiry of the 14 day period, co-opt a person to fill the vacancy.

The returning officer's address is: Flintshire County Council, County Hall, Mold, Flintshire, CH7 6NR and the phone number for more information is 01352 702 329.
