GIRLS' football in a Wrexham village is going from strength to strength.

While one of the junior girls teams at Brymbo Lodge YFC have secured new kit sponsorship and made it to the quarter-finals of their first competition, another of their sides were mascots for Wrexham AFC's crunch play-off clash against Eastleigh at the Racecourse Ground.

Kieran Howard, club coach, says he hopes the positivity around the girls section of the club will help encourage more to get involved, with the 2019 FIFA Women's World cup also on the horizon.

He said: "The older girls' team has just secured sponsorship from Read Construction which will enable them to get new kit for next season.

"We're very grateful and it's particularly good because Read are a Brymbo-based company.

"The younger girls, the eight to 10 year-olds, were official mascots for the Wrexham v Eastleigh play-off game. The result didn't go the way we wanted but it was a fantastic experience for them, in front of a crowd of 7,000 and being on BT Sport.

"For some of them it was their first ever Wrexham AFC game and they have already told their parents they want to go again next season.

"It was a fantastic promotion for girls football and we are thankful to the Racecourse Community Foundation for the invite."
