A FLINTSHIRE High School is holding a community recycling event to raise much-needed funds to continue its support of students.

Castell Alun High School, in Hope, will be holding the recycling day from 11.00am to 1.00pm on Saturday, May 11.

The event is being run in partnership with the school’s Eco Council in an attempt to generate funds which will be used to expand the resources available to its over 1300 students.

Parents, and members of the public are being encouraged to attend, and to bring along any unwanted items to donate to the cause – including unused mobile phones and gadgets, CDs, DVDs, clothes, and a variety of other goods.

As a further incentive to support the cause, those who donate five or more items will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win an eco-friendly hamper.

The school’s Parents and Teachers Association, a registered charity known as CAFA (Castell Alun Friends’ Association), has also launched a new lottery which is open to anyone who wishes to support it.

The first draw will be made at the beginning of June before then being drawn on a weekly basis, with winners being able to claim a cash prize – based on the number of players in Castell Alun’s lottery. Due to the lottery being run via Your School Lottery, players also have a chance of winning a weekly jackpot prize of £25,000 in a separate, wider weekly draw which includes lottery players from other schools.

Chair of CAFA, Niky Baker, said: “Having helped Castell Alun with funding for a minibus, we’re continuing to support them in buying other learning resources that are needed.

“The school would also like to provide a covered walkway through its quad and we are intending to make a contribution to that if we can.

“Given the increasing awareness of the damage being done by climate change we felt the recycling event was one way we could fundraise while also recognising our responsibilities to do what we can to help the environment.”
