A TOWN COUNCIL aiming to transform a fifteenth century courthouse into a community and tourist hub this summer has launched a final community fundraising effort.

Ruthin Town Council’s ideas for the use of the historic, timber-framed Old Courthouse, situated on St Peter’s Square, include community functions, small music concerts, film screenings and committee meetings.

It could also be used as a drop-off point for coach visits after the town was awarded coach-friendly status in April.

Following the council's purchase of the old building in January, it acquired £90,000 from its reserves and match funding, but needed a final £10,000 for the restoration and refurbishment work, which would see a modern interior, exhibition displays, lighting and signage.

The council launched a crowdfunding appeal for public and local business backing, raising £8,000 in just two weeks. But it has now set a new stretch target of £20,000, which would allow the project to provide additional facilities.

Gavin Harris, deputy mayor of Ruthin, said: “The council and working group would like to thank all those that have so generously donated.

"Over 350 businesses and retailers in Ruthin have been sent a letter seeking support. The volunteer team behind the project includes architects, engineers, heritage specialists and building experts who have given their time for nothing.

“We hope that everyone can share their enthusiasm and belief in the benefit this facility will bring to the whole community and give it their support.”

Contributions are acknowledged through various levels of sponsorship, such as digital recognition, names on a commemorative paper scroll or, for larger donors, their name on the founders' wall in the building lobby.

Donations can be made through the Old Courthouse Crowdfunding page before the deadline at 7am on Monday, May 22.
