TOWN council members agreed that enough was enough after recovering a ‘shocking’ amount discarded plastic last month at a community clean-up.

Councillors in Mold have described the amount of plastic collected during the tenth annual Mold Spring Clean in April, especially bottles, as ‘shocking’.

The council is now looking to instigate a local initiative to reduce the amount of single-use plastic in Mold.

Cittaslow Mold and the council are organising a public meeting at the Daniel Owen Centre on Monday, May 13 at 7pm to listen to people’s ideas and agree on actions that can be taken as residents, businesses, schools and organisations to reduce single-use plastic in town.

Cllr Andrea Mearns said: “It can be quite a challenge to find alternatives and to ensure that products can be easily recycled.

“Even though the recycling rate in Wales is ahead of the rest of the UK, second in Europe and third in the world, there is still a lot more to do when it comes to us being actively engaged in reducing how much single-use plastic we use.

“We hope that people will come with their ideas and are inspired by the excellent speakers lined up for the public meeting on May 13.”

The Leader previously reported

how a total of 730 volunteers contributed more than 875 hours of their time to the Mold Spring Clean, collecting more than 330 bags of rubbish from April 5 to April 8

.

Mair Davies, chair of Llangollen Plastic Free, will be there to share tips on how to cut single-use plastic in day-to-day life, and show her plan developed to help people to shop without using plastic in Llangollen.

Amy Green, Wild About Mold project officer for North Wales Wildlife Trust, will talk about the impact of plastics on our environment

The meeting will also hear from two Mold Alun students on measures their school is taking to reduce plastics.
