FLINTSHIRE Council is urging residents to make their voices heard by registering to vote ahead of the upcoming European Parliament Election.

People from across the United Kingdom are due to have their say in the European Parliament Election on Thursday, May 23, and Flintshire Council wants its residents to make sure they’re registered.

Those who wish to register to vote have until Tuesday, May 7 to do so if they are not already on the Electoral Register, while the closing date to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday, May 8.

The deadline to register for proxy votes, meanwhile, is a week later at 5pm on Wednesday, May 15.

Flintshire Council Chief Executive and Local Returning Officer, Colin Everett, said: “It’s important that people have the opportunity to take part in this election and do not miss out because they are un-registered.

“People should not assume that they are able to vote just because they are registered for other things such as Council Tax.

“If in doubt, residents should contact our experienced Electoral Services Team to check whether they are registered to vote, or for any advice and information.”

The nation looked set to miss out on the vote – which takes place every five years - with Great Britain being expected to leave the European Union on March 29, 2019.

However, after an extension of the Article 50 process, the UK is now due to participate in the election alongside the other EU member states.

You can register to vote by visiting www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or by calling the Electoral Services Team on 01352 702412.

A full list of candidates, meanwhile, is available on the Wales Regional Returning Officer’s website.
