A LADIES night will be held in Wrexham in aid of the Special Care Baby Unit at the Maelor Hospital.

The event will be held at The Centenary Club in Wrexham on Friday 21st June and will commence at 7.30pm.

All proceeds raised from this event will be donated to the Cherish charity, which was founded in 1987, and are located at the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) in Wrexham's Maelor Hospital.

The charity, which is ran by volunteers of both parents and SCBU staff, hopes that by working together will provide a better start in life to the tiny or sick babies, as well as their families who have been treated and cared for on the unit.

Becky Newson, 30, and a second year student nurse at Bangor University but who is based on its Wrexham's campus, spoke of the frightening ordeal behind her holding this event.

She said: "When my son, Caleb, was born at 37 weeks old, he became a patient at the SCBU for about two weeks.

His early arrival came so unexpectedly. I am a carrier of group B streptococcus and although I had antibiotics during labour, Caleb was born with sepsis and respiratory disease syndrome.

The staff on the ward were outstanding. I was able to stay in the accommodation on SCBU during Caleb's stay, all thanks to Cherish, who provided the onsite accommodation which I feel is massively important to new mums."

As well as providing accommodation, the charity also provides vital funds for much-needed equipment for the ward, which is not always available through the NHS due to funding.

Mrs Newson, voiced her gratitude towards the staff at the unit and the influence it had to her career.

She said: "The staff are actually the reason I am doing my nursing degree, as I want to make a difference to someone’s life, like they did to mine."

Tickets for this event are priced at £22 per person and will see a range of fun activities taking place throughout the night, which includes a comedy drag act, male strippers and a live DJ.

Guests will also have the opportunity to win a variety of prizes, including raffle prizes, a spa day, a lunch for two, an hour facial and many more.

Tickets can be purchased online at https://bookwhen.com/cherishladiesnight or by calling 07792241120.
