A DOG has been left fighting for its life following a savage attack from another dog in Flintshire.

The dog, named Jasper, has been taken to an emergency animal hospital in Manchester after the attack on Sunday morning in Broughton.

Jasper, a Jack Russell who is owned by Wrexham man Matt Gregory, was attacked on Brookes Avenue while being walked by his 78 year old mother, who lives in Broughton and was looking after Jasper while Mr Gregory was on holiday.

Having been taken to emergency vets, it has become clear that Jasper has extensive injuries to his chest. He has three or four broken ribs and punctures to his lung, and is likely to need open chest surgery at the cost of about £7,000.

Alarmingly, there have been at least four unconfirmed other attacks in Broughton in recent weeks.

Mr Gregory, who lives with partner Mary Jones, said he has no pet insurance and has been unable at present to make contact with the irresponsible owner of the other dog to obtain insurance details.

He said: "Although I am confident that contact will be made with that owner in time, Jasper's injuries can’t afford time and he will have to receive treatment soon for a chance to live.

And Mr Gregory added that 'heartbroken doesn’t even come close' to how he and Miss Jones are feeling following the incident.

Mr Gregory said: "Jasper means everything to us, having no children, he is like our child.

"He’s always involved in our day to day lives whether that be jumping on the bed in the morning for cuddles, greeting us when returning from work by waiting in the window and running to the door when we arrive, shadowing us when making tea, putting the washing out or cleaning the house.

"Everybody who meets him loves Jasper."

"He’s always wanting to play and if you’re having a down day he will always want to be by your side to make you feel better, as if he instinctively knows that you’re not feeling great. He’s so loyal and affectionate, he never give up on us. That’s why I won’t ever give up on him."

A North Wales Police spokesman said: "We are aware of the incident and enquiries are still ongoing."

Anyone with information relating to this incident can contact police on 101 quoting reference number X054302.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help raise the £7,000 that is needed for Jasper's treatment, and has raised nearly £2000 in just over a day. It can be found at https://bit.ly/2W0QkHf
