COMMUNITY leaders are unanimously against a plan to expand a health care complex on the grounds of road safety.

The owners of the Pendine Park complex have applied to Wrexham Council to provide new specialist services and extra care facilities to expand and complement existing services at the nursing home in Summerhill.

Gwersyllt Community Council has for some time complained about the safety of the narrow Summerhill Road which is used by many of the staff.

Community councillors say the highway does not have a pavement in some parts and is particularly dangerous at nighttime.

The community council is objecting unanimously to the plan.

In their objections to the proposal to Wrexham Council planners, they say the land under consideration forms part of the green wedge and should be retained as such.

The community council is concerned about the effect of the development on the character of the area and considers the application to be contrary to policies put in place by the local planning authority to protect green wedge land.

The nursing home employs more than 500 staff, many of whom walk to and from work along Summerhill Road which is an unlit highway and no footpaths between Griffiths Road and Highfield Road.

Councillors also say speeding on Summerhill Road is giving them much cause for concern

And cuts to local bus services will leave many employees no alternative but to continue to walk to and from work.

The council is also concerned that the development will result in the loss of trees that provide significant amenity value to the local environment.

However, community councillors are recommends that if Wrexham planning authority does decide to grant the application, it should impose on the developer a requirement to provide a substantial Section 106 commitment to help deal with the road safety issues they have highlighted.
