THE STEPMUM of a secondary school pupil has spoke of her horror upon discovering her stepson had been shot by a BB gun at school.

Ruth Davies says she received a call from Ysgol Bryn Alyn in Gwersyllt on Monday at around 3.30pm and was told her stepson had been shot by a fellow pupil who had brought a BB gun onto the premises.

However, according to Mrs Davies, a handful of children had been shot by the BB gun, with the incident taking place between 11am and 12pm, but the parents of the injured children were not informed until 3.30pm.

Mrs Davies said: “I was, and still am, absolutely disgusted with the school.

“I went in to have a talk with the safeguarding officer about what had happened, and when I saw the gun he had used, I was even more horrified.

“It’s not a little toy like I expected it would be, this thing looked like a real handgun, how could a single member of staff not have seen this?

“I was told that there are patrolling staff around the school but they can’t see everything that’s happening, I cannot believe they wouldn’t see a pupil walking around the school holding what actually looks like a real gun. I think it’s completely and utterly disgraceful.”

Mrs Davies said her stepson was in severe pain, she added he was crying when she saw him, and that he did not want to go back to school the next day because he was worried about it happening again.

She added: “I think it was dealt with appallingly. My stepson was shot at school by a BB gun, and I was not made aware of it for hours. The second it happened, I, along with all the other parents, should have been notified and we should have been there immediately by his side.”

Mrs Davies concluded by questioning the safety of her stepchild at school, while also saying the incident has made her worry about something worse potentially happening.

“There has been no indication of what the punishment is going to be for the child who shot the BB gun, but I need to know my child is going to be safe when he goes to school and right now I’m not sure if he is.”

Adele Slinn, headteacher at Ysgol Bryn Alyn, said: “An incident took place at the school on Monday, involving a BB gun. No students were seriously injured during the incident. We, of course, do not tolerate any student acting in this manner, or bringing items such as these into the school, and we wish to assure parents that this incident has been dealt with appropriately.”
