A WREXHAM councillor has used some of his environmental budget to transform a green space in New Broughton.

Cllr Nigel Williams, who represents the Gwenfro ward, said the concept was to improve the routes walked to and from Ysgol Penrhyn, with the green fingered pupils from the school on hand to add the finishing touches to the site at School Lane.

Cllr Williams said: "The fencing was erected at the end of last year and the planting scheme was planned for the spring.

"I have had fencing installed around the perimeter, and had a large bed dug out in the centre, and the children have been and planted a mixture of shrubs and blossom trees."

Cllr Williams said Ysgol Penrhyn are always keen to get involved with any community and environmental projects in the area and that the children really enjoyed helping out and improving their local area.

He added: "Some said they helped parents in the garden and some said this was the first time they had planted any plants or done gardening and had enjoyed it. They said they would look forward to walking past the area and watch the plants and trees grow.

"It is important that we have these grassed areas for the children to play in and families to enjoy and for the children to have pride and to take ownership in there local community."

Cllr Williams also thanked local landscape officers for their help and promised that this one of a few schemes planned to improve the look of the area, including looking at a number of off-road parking schemes.
