EXPERTS will be supporting North Wales farmers to achieve better spring calving results at a special upcoming event in St Asaph.

The free, four-hour seminar – which is approved by the National Farmers Union – is set to take place on Thursday, April 18, and will bring specialists together with farmers from across the region to discuss planning for better results in the spring calving season.

Vet, and cow fertility expert, Kate Burnby, and Terry King from iAGRI, will be among those to speak at the ‘Fertility in the Spring Calving Herd – Planning for Better Results’ event.

While Ms Burnby is set to advise on how to ensure that cows, farms, and farmers alike are focused and prepared for optimised results, Mr King will demonstrate to attendees how cow records and information can be collected and interpreted by farmers to assist their herds fertility and genetic progress.

The event, which is being run by Farming Connect and AHDB Dairy with support from NFU Cymru, will cover a range of essential topics including nutrition, pre-mating checks, health and body condition scoring, heat detection techniques, and more.

NFU Cymru Milk Board Chairman Gareth Richards, said: “The ‘Fertility in the Spring Calving Herd’ event, which is to be held in St Asaph on April 18, is a great opportunity for farmers to gain knowledge that can be vital for any spring grazing block calving herd.

“There is always something that someone else is doing that can benefit your business. We can always learn from other people’s practices, whether this be what to do, or what not to do.

“The conference, which is run by Farming Connect and AHDB, will allow those in attendance to hear from industry experts and to gain a further understanding in fertility and spring calving, which will enable them to drive productivity and performance.”

Achieving a tight 6-week calving period is vital for any spring grazing block calving herd. This can only be done with well managed cows, who show strong heats, are observed, and inseminated correctly and in time.

The ‘Fertility in the Spring Calving Herd – Planning for Better Results’ event will take place between 10.30am and 2.30pm on Thursday, April 18, at The Plough, Llanelwy.

It is free to attend, and lunch will be provided. For more information, or to book your place, contact Simon Pitt either by phone: 07939177935 or email: simon.pitt@menterabusnes.co.uk.
