HOME I’m Darling, the first producing collaboration between Mold's Theatr Clwyd and the National Theatre on London’s South Bank, has won a prestigious Olivier Award.

The play, which was nominated for five awards on the night, was named Best New Comedy at the glittering awards ceremony held at London's Royal Albert Hall and hosted by comedian Jason Manford.

Home I’m Darling was written by Laura Wade and directed by Theatr Clwyd’s artistic director Tamara Harvey. Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd, Doc Martin and Humans) and Richard Harrington (Hinterland) both star in the dark comedy about one woman's quest to be the perfect 1950s housewife.

The play, which can currently be seen in the West End, opened in Mold last June before moving onto the National’s Theatre’s Dorfman Stage in July and played to sell-out audiences in both theatres. It returns to Theatr Clwyd for one week only, from April 30 - May 4.

"We're on cloud nine and I think the whole building is too," said Liam Evans-Ford, Theatr Clwyd's executive director. "Everyone is just floating a bit because it feels pretty surreal that our theatre on top of a hill in north east Wales has gone and won an Olivier Award.

The Leader:

"Around about this time last year we were in rehearsals for the first run with Tamara directing and our crafts, scenic and construction teams building the structure. Our arts team painted it and and our props team made all the props and our wardrobe team made all the costumes by hand. It's been an incredible journey.

"When theatres outside London are so heavily dependent on shows coming from London, here we are doing it the opposite way around and bucking the trend and exporting a play on behalf of our region. I just wish we had more room in the auditorium because it is already nearly sold out and there'll be lots of people who will discover it anew because of the award."

Paying tribute to Ms Harvey and the rest of the staff at Theatr Clwyd, Mr Evans-Ford, who attended the ceremony, added that it was an "extraordinary" result for the venue.

"It is completely down to the skill, dedication and hard work of all the staff here at Theatr Clwyd," he added. "I'd also like to thank Flintshire County Council who have to be one of the best local authorities in the UK when it comes to having a funding culture for the arts. Their commitment is second to none.

"It is an award for every single member of staff."
