A FAMILY has paid tribute to a ‘much-loved’ doctor.
Retired doctor John Matthias, who was born and went to school in Wrexham, died aged 74 on March 19.
His son David paid tribute to his father describing him as a “kind and loving family man, who spent his retirement supporting several local charities”.
Dr Matthias was born in Ruabon and grew up in New Broughton.
He attended Grove Park School for Boys and went to Birmingham University to study medicine, going on to work in Birmingham, West Africa and Shrewsbury as a doctor until his retirement 15 years ago.
Dr Matthias is survived by his wife Marion (formerly Griffiths), from Southsea, Wrexham and their three children.
While working in Shrewsbury he was based at the Albert Road Surgery in Sundorne for just more than 20 years.
He was a governor of Holy Cross Junior School (now Mereside) for many years.
