A SYSTEM of helping combat loneliness and other mental health issues is being implemented in Wrexham.
Instead of reaching for the prescription pad, GP's and health professionals across Wrexham can now send patients to see a social prescriber.
The holistic approach enables social prescribers to ‘prescribe’ for patients emotional wellbeing as well as providing practical assistance to deal with the issues that are affecting health.
The Rainbow Centre in Penley is delivering the social prescribing service on behalf of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board with support from GP Surgeries across Wrexham.
Geraldine Vaughan, operational manager at the Rainbow Centre, said: "Loneliness alone is as damaging to our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
"Similarly, we see the impact that housing, debt, caring responsibilities, or dealing with a health condition can have on a persons wellbeing.
"Social prescriptions can include referrals to yoga, singing, dance, or drawing classes which can effectively tackle loneliness, reduce blood pressure and improve mental health. Social Prescribers also provide a listening ear and provide practical support to help you deal with a range of crises and improve your emotional state."
