A BOXING club in Wrexham has been nominated as a finalist for the Airbus and Leader Community Awards, for its work in the community.

Brymbo Boxing Club have been chosen as one of 10 groups or organisations, for the work they do in tackling anti-social behaviour in the Brymbo area.

The club, which is run by secretary Mark Ray and head trainer Pete Buckley, say that by having newer and better equipment they can offer services to more people, including offering a drop-in facility where the youth of Brymbo can come in and use their equipment.

The club also work with police community support officers to encourage children to join the club, rather than getting themselves into trouble. As well as this, children are able to learn about fitness and nutrition, how to focus on education, and community spirit.

Ray said: "We're obviously absolutely made up.

"What a lot of people don't realise is that the kids that come to the club don't always have a lot of money, so we don't always charge them.

"We need equipment, gum shields, gloves and wraps, and people don't realise how much this costs.

"We will use all of the funding to purchase new equipment, which will go to help more younger people get into boxing and fitness, get fitter, be off the streets for a while and give them some focus and direction.

"This is excellent news though. It'll make a real difference."

Prize money for the awards will be divided up, with first prize receiving £7,000, second prize of £4,000 and third prize receiving £2,000.

The seven remaining finalists will each receive £1,000.
