A SCHOOL breakfast club has been shortlisted for an Airbus and Leader Community Award.

The breakfast club at St David's High School, in Saltney Ferry, is open to all youngsters at the school and provides them with a free, healthy breakfast.

It is now one of 10 projects which have been shortlisted for the awards - the top prize for which is £7,000.

Bethan Edge, who is head of Year 9 and teaches maths at the school, said: "It came to light after the school participated in a national health survey that our students are significantly less likely to eat breakfast in the morning compared to other Flintshire schools.

"As healthy schools coordinator I decided to do something about it and set up a free breakfast club for all students.

"Initially the resources came out of my pocket, then the school managed to find some money in the budget but it won't last forever."

Miss Edge explained the funds would be used to buy healthy breakfast produce and equipment so the project can cater for more students.

She said depending on the amount of funding it received, the future of the club could be secured for another three years, adding: "It is helping out more vulnerable students, as well as creating a little community atmosphere in the mornings.

"It really benefits the learners and the students, especially those from less fortunate backgrounds.

"They have access to come in and get a free healthy breakfast every morning, which takes the pressure off parents."

Miss Edge said the project also helps to benefit the pupils by aiding their concentration.
