Cycling on pavements is a 'nightmare' and pedestrians are 'taking their life into their own hands, residents have said.

The Leader has previously reported how councillors called for action to be taken over cycling on pavements through Connah's Quay and Shotton.

Cllr Mike Evans, of Shotton town council, said the middle of the town is like the M1 sometimes and someone is going to get seriously hurt.

Residents across the county had their say on the issue.

Ste Jones said he walks through Shotton to do the school run twice a day and has lost count of the times he has had to dodge a cyclist.

He added: "There are a few who respect pedestrians and let you know they're about but then the majority will just fly past you without a second thought.

"This is mainly adults who don’t care. It’s about time something was done."

Keiran O'Loan said some cyclists are a 'nightmare' and need lights on their bikes as well as light clothing so they can be seen.

Gaynor Davies commented: "Cyclists are very disrespectful in this area. I have no objection to them staying safe but they do not stop for pedestrians. I have almost been run over many times.

"They also ride at great speed as if it's a road and their right. It needs policing."

Derek Hollins added: "Every time you set foot on the pavement in Shotton or Connah's Quay you are taking your life in your hands.

"Cyclists are flying past in all directions, it is so scary. Nothing seems to be done.

"I think it is about time after being told not to do it on next time court bike taken from them if they want it back thy pay a fine graduating for each offence."

Diana Porter Prev Price said: "Cyclists on the path are a nightmare. One nearly hit my toddler.

"However the ones on the road that go through the lights when you're crossing the road are just as bad.

"Not all cyclists are the same though. Don't mind them on the path as long as they are slow and respectful and mind out of the pedestrians way."

However, some support was given to cyclists, with residents saying that cycling on a pavement is safer than doing so on a road.

Rodney Milton suggested giving cyclists a proper cycle path.

He added: "Give cyclists proper cycle path. and encourage their use. Reduce the amount of cars (and pollution) by encouraging people to use public transport, walk and take up responsible cycling.

"As a pedestrian I have had problems with people cycling on the pavement but by the same token as a cyclist I have have problems with bad driving when I cycle on the road."

Rodney Milton said: "A cycle link under the railway line to the cycle path from Celtic Street to the Dock Road would also be helpful."
