A WOMAN aims to reduce social isolation for local heroes.

Jane Bellis has started a weekly workshop for veterans, which will start this Thursday, March 21.

She told the Leader: "Anyone can come along and learn new skills, it's great for elderly people and those with a history in the forces.

"The aim really is to reduce isolation and give them a new sense of purpose. They will get together and at the end we will have a huge display at the great get together which is a national event and show everyone what they have been working on.

"A lot of people have said they want something to take their mind off of things and there's nothing like this in the community.

"I'm really excited for it to start it will be great and they have already got some great ideas."

The 12-week project will see attendees take part in creative workshops from photography, arts and crafts and creative writing.

Jane, who runs the Art and Soul Tribe Community Interest Company, said the initial idea stemmed from the 2015 show on inclusion and diversity.

The project will be held this Thursday at the new Victoria Cross hub on Rowley's Drive (the old Chorus Hub) from 1pm to 4pm.

A community event will be held in Shotton in June to display the work that has been created during the project.
