A ROAD on the Wales-England border has been shut due to a huge sinkhole.

Boundary Lane in Saltney is closed for emergency repairs to fix the deep hole in the road.

Welsh Water has closed the busy Saltney road while it works to repair leaks on the sewer network in two locations along Boundary Lane, but hopes to reopen it within 10 days.

Bazz Jones, a cab driver for Abbey Taxis in Chester, described his shock at coming across the sizeable hole.

He said: "It was a shock seeing it, I literally drove over that very same spot just this past Thursday.

"As a cab driver it's a road I use alot.  If I lived there I'd be really worried about the ground under my home."

But Boundary Lane resident Sarah Hughes is looking on the bright side of the road closure.

She said: "I’m pleased as it’s stopped all the speeding motorists, it’s a shame that whilst fixing this they can’t put in traffic calming measures too. Now that would be ideal."

A Welsh Water spokesman said: "We are currently carrying out emergency repairs to our sewer network in two locations along Boundary Lane, Saltney. We are working on Boundary Lane near the junction with Green Lane and next to Kingdom Hall.

"So that our contractors can work safely to carry out the repair, and for the safety of motorists, a section of Boundary Lane is closed to traffic and local diversions are in place.

"Our team will be working to carry out the repair over the next few days and we hope to have the road fully reopened with 10 days, but we will do our best to finish sooner.

"We would like to apologise for the inconvenience this may cause. If you would like more information about the work please give us a call on 0800 085 3968 contractors have been working in 'extremely challenging weather conditions' to carry out the work."

The Number 16 Stagecoach bus service which ordinarily runs through Boundary Lane is being diverted through Park Avenue.
