A VILLAGE'S sheepdog show has donated £1,000 to its nearest hospital's cancer unit.

The Llandrillo Sheepdog Trials (LST), which has been held every year since 2001, raised the sum at its event last summer which saw about 65 entries from surrounding communities to compete in its sheep herding and dog show events.

The funds raised by voluntary donations from participants and attendees will be donated to Wrexham Maelor Hospital's Shooting Star Unit, which provides support and a relaxing outdoor space for cancer patients, their families and carers.

The LST committee consists of 12 village residents and members of surrounding agricultural communities who volunteer their time for meetings and events.

Last year's show also consisted of a best pet dog competition and a cooking competition for adults and children.

Geraint Jones, secretary of the LST committee, said the hospital is the decided recipient because it has helped the Llandrillo community "at times of need".

He said: “The Sheepdog Trials are going from strength to strength and we raised more than ever this time round.

“Wrexham Maelor Hospital has helped the village at times of need recently which is why we decided to donate to them.

“It has been a community effort, by all of the committee members and public who donated. Hopefully the funds will help the hospital purchase new equipment.”
