A WOMAN who has struggled with her own mental health aims to inspire others.

Kat Jane Massey, of Connah's Quay, started a blog to talk about her own situations and called herself the 'Honest Blogger', which later turned into her writing a book.

She told the Leader: "I could not believe the response I had, by showing and talking to people about my own struggles with Mental Health I was helping them. The walls I built so, so high started to come down, being more and more open and the authentic me.

"My blogs turned into a book and with that I got asked to do public speaking, with Kim Inspire Hubb in Holywell being one of them.

"I got to meet a lovely group where I shared my story and they shared theirs. I got to meet the people behind the backbone of the charity, I visited on several more occasions and I knew then I wanted to help."

On May 18, a charity ball will be held for the first time in North Wales to raise awareness of mental health and all proceeds raised will go towards KIM Inspire.

Ms Massey, who was a stylist for 26 years before taking early retirement after the loss of a close friend, said it is a charity ball with a difference.

She added: "We will hold the first ever awards for North Wales hairdressers. Six counties have been picked and nominated by the public, for salons that have gone above and beyond for their clients.

"You know how scary it can be for some to walk into a salon, especially if their mental health is suffering. These salons have all made it to the finals, where an independent panel will pick the runners up and over all winner.

"This is a red carpet charity event. Not only will we support local business recognise local business, but we will raise money for an amazing charity and let everyone know it's there and what Kim offers and together get others like myself to speak out."

KIM is a mental health charity which offers a wide range of facilities for health and well-being.

The event will be held at the Beaufort Park-Hotel and is sponsored by Wendy Balloons, Chair Covers by Carys, FSB, Clic photography, Cardrew Media, Rock Choir and Danni Ann who will be performing on the night.

Ms Massey said more sponsors are welcome and is encouraging more people to get involved in a bid to end the stigma surrounding mental health.
