TRANSPORT chiefs have pledged to work with police in an effort to find out who ruined an elderly volunteer's floral displays at Buckley Railway Station.

The Leader reported yesterday how vandals tipped up and 'bashed in' a wheelbarrow containing a floral display at the station as well as pulling down a window box, scattering their contents across the floor.

Cleveland Jones, who has maintained the station's displays and kept the platforms tidy for several years, told the Leader of his disappointment and said he was considering not returning the flowers for fear they may be damaged again.

Cllr David Ellis, mayor of Buckley, told the Leader: "I'm very disappointed, Cleveland puts a fantastic effort in to keep the station in an immaculate condition.

"It's a lovely job he does there. This is mindless vandalism and everyone in the town is unhappy about it."

Geraint Morgan, community affairs manager for Transport for Wales said: “It is very sad to learn of the damage done to the floral displays at Buckley station, and we will work closely with British Transport Police to find the culprits responsible for this act of wanton vandalism.

“Stations are often key facilities in the community, where first impressions count.

"Our station adopters make a significant contribution to ensure unstaffed stations always look their best.

“By going that extra mile, their support helps ensure customers receive a clean, friendly and welcoming environment when arriving at stations, so seeing this vandalism at Buckley station is very sad.”

Readers took to the Leader's Facebook page to express their shock and sadness at the incident.

Gillian Edwards said: "I feel so sorry for this gentleman after all the work he has done.

"I hope the people of Buckley will come together and help him get it back to the beautiful place it was before the vandals did this."

Anthony Caven-Lewis posted: "So sorry for this gentleman who was going good for the Buckley community...sad day."

A spokesman for British Transport Police (BTP) said: "We received a report of criminal damage at 11.50am on February 28 at Buckley station following the damaging of flowerbeds.

"Enquiries into the incident are ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the offence is asked to contact BTP by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40 and quoting reference 160 of 28/02/19."
