COUNCILLORS were unanimous in their support of investing in lifesaving equipment.

At their meeting on Wednesday night, Llay Community Council discussed a proposal put forward by Cllr Dave Admans for them to purchase two new defibrillators at a cost of £3,000, with the general consensus being that three would be more beneficial.

Cllr Bryan said it was a "jolly good idea" for the council to make the purchase, but wanted to make sure any decision was made when all the background information about the proposal was available, as Cllr Adams was unable to attend the meeting.

He said: "It's a very good idea, but I would prefer to have some further information about where they will be sighted and what security will be needed to protect them."

Cllr Dennis Owen suggested the Crown pub would be an ideal location for one of the defibrillators, because of it's close proximity to the industrial estate and the houses in and around Gresford Road, but suggested having three would be even better.

He said: "You're supposed to reach a defibrillator in four minutes so ideally, I think three might be required to adequately serve the village."

Other potential sites suggested include the Royal British Legion and the Llay Resource Centre, while it was confirmed the Miner's Welfare already has one, but it is situated inside the building, meaning emergency access to it outside of opening hours was impossible.

Cllr Sharon Roberts agreed with the proposal and said the Crown pub would be the ideal location, because the area is always busy and well-lit but has concerns about one being sited at the Resource Centre, due to issues of anti-social behaviour.

She said: "I know there's CCTV, but that doesn't cover everywhere and it wouldn't take much for someone to damage them. But I think it's a fantastic idea and if we do decide to go for it, three would be the ideal number due to the size of the village."

The councillors will now go away and carry out their own research about the viability of potential locations and a further quote will be request from a Conwy based company who have installed others in the area and also provide training on how to use them.

The item has been re-listed for the March monthly meeting at which point a decision will be made about how many should be bought and where they should be located.
