VOLUNTEERS came together to help plant new trees at a town's green space.

As part of the ‘Wild About Mold’ project, North Wales Wildlife Trust (NWWT), partners and volunteers are planting trees in several locations across the town.

The new tree sites were picked by the residents of Mold through a consultation carried out by Mold Town Council.

A group of volunteers and representatives of Mold Town Council, NWWT and Flintshire Council met to plant a range of new trees near Gas Lane play area on Tuesday morning.

The group planted seven Alder trees, a Redwood and three Scots Pines as well as a Hawthorn and Hazel hedgerow.

Amy Green, Wild About Mold project officer, said: "We had about 15 people helping today - we're really pleased with the turnout."

Sarah Slater, Flintshire Council's biodiversity officer, said: "We have lots of species which are good for pollinators - we're trying to work with pollinators across Flintshire.

"After our planting is finished in Mold we will be going to other areas - Connah's Quay and Saltney are next, as well as Bagillt."

She added the efforts tie into Flintshire's recently published tree plan, which aims to boost the urban canopy cover across the county.

On Tuesday the group was joined by members of CAIS as well as volunteers from Mold Town Council and North Wales Wildlife Trust.

The scheme is also supported by Cittaslow Mold and previously received support in planting trees from Mold WI.

Cllr Andrea Mearns, who also took part in the scheme, said: "It is an amazing project and the volunteers have done brilliantly.

"It will make such a difference for the future."

Kate Surrey, a resident of Mold, took part in the consultation last year to have her say on where the new trees should be located.

After attending with her three-year-old son Leo to help plant the trees at Gas Lane, she told the Leader: "I think it's a great initiative and Mold needs more of it.

"It is about making the place nicer for wildlife and for people."

The group will next meet to plant trees at Kendrick's Field in Mold on Thursday from 10am.

Anyone interested in joining in is advised to bring wellies and lunch.
