THE first train of the new season hit the tracks at Llangollen this week.

On Monday morning, the heritage diesel railcar carried families on a half-term holiday ride through the picturesque Dee Valley to Carrog.

The railcar offers great views of the line with its front and rear window positions so passengers can really see where they are going - or where they have been.

Winter management of the line-side vegetation carried out by volunteers has improved views of the valley and its remoter areas have been opened up for passengers to enjoy the area of outstanding natural beauty.

At Carrog, a 40 minute stop over allows time for a hot drink in the station tearooms or a walk down the lane to Carrog bridge over the river Dee before joining the train back. There is also the option of staying longer for a later train if guests wish to take the opportunity to walk a section of the Dee Valley.

A spokesman for Llangollen Railway Station said: "The passenger numbers on the first train were encouraging with several families travelling to take advantage of half-term offers.

"Trains in the second part of the week and at weekends will be with a steam engine."
