HUNDREDS of pounds has been raised for a leading cancer charity.

A Valentine's 80's fancy dress event held at the Connah's Quay Labour Club over the weekend brought in £600 for Cancer Research UK.

Members of the Deeside committee of Cancer Research UK have been raising money for the charity for about thirty years.

Ray Woolley, member of the committee, helped to organise the event which saw the Connah's Quay community rally together to show their support.

He said: "It was a good event, we had a perfect result and raised £600. This is my 46th year fundraising for charity and I try to do what I can.

"My brother died of cancer almost thirty years ago so I got more involved with fundraising when he died. I wanted to do what I could in his memory and it is a worthwhile cause.

"Without people like us fundraising, where is the money going to come from? The country is run on charity and I just wish they would get the breakthrough they deserve."

About 60 people attended the annual event in their best fancy dress outfits and enjoyed a night of live music.

Mr Woolley added: "We (as a committee) don't do as much as we used to anymore because there's not many of us now, there's only four, but we still do what we can.

"It was a good night and everyone enjoyed themselves. Me, personally, I'm not in it for the glory, I do it for my brother but it's good to be able to do something to help others."

The committee member told the Leader he is also planning to do his annual row, which has been going for 40 years, to raise further funds for the worthwhile cause.
