A TOWN has come together to celebrate a milestone win for Welsh football.

Connah's Quay Nomads have become the first team from Wales to reach the final of the Irn Bru Cup after their historic semi-final win over Edinburgh City FC set up a clash against the Scottish Championship side Ross County next month.

The current Welsh Premier League leaders were joined by The New Saints as Welsh representatives in this year's competition, but wins against Falkirk, Coleraine, Queen's Park, and most recently, Edinburgh City sees them reach the 2018/19 final.

The Leader took to the streets of Connah's Quay to see what local residents thought of the achievement.

Ian Parry, coach for u13's Connah's Quay Tigers, said: "I'm made up with them, they are our local team and it's good that a Welsh team has got through to the final and is the first non-Scottish team to get through."

Bob Francis added: "It was a good game, I enjoyed it. I watched it on TV and it was good. They have done very well I have to say, I don't watch many of their games as much as I used to but they fought well. I used to watch every game because my brother in law used to play for them but I was pleasantly surprised."

The Nomads played in front of a record-breaking attendance of 1,068 at the Deeside College Stadium with fans travelling from Scotland to watch.

John Bennett told the Leader: "I went to watch the match at the stadium and it was a good result. I enjoyed it when I went, it was a big game and they did very well. I think it's a good achievement."

Brenda Griffiths also attended the match. She said: "It was a good atmosphere, we went down as a group and it was good to see the place packed and everyone getting along. There was no trouble and everyone was mingling both Welsh and Scottish."

The Connah's Quay Nomads, who are currently top of the Welsh Premier League, beat Edinburgh City 5-4 on penalties in their semi-final clash after the two sides couldn't be separated over 120 minutes.

Connah's Quay Town Council has offered its congratulations to the team for their result and also hosting the night. A spokesman said: "It was great to be part of history.

"Their recent success in Europe, the Welsh Cup, the Irn Bru Cup – and being top of the league – has certainly helped raise the profile of the club and town, and long may that continue. We wish the team the best of luck in the final and am sure the town will be right behind them."

Jack Sargeant, AM for Alyn and Deeside, also attended the match to show his support for his local team as a sponsor for the cup.

He told the Leader: "I'm proud to have been match day sponsor at the Nomads historic win on the weekend. It was great to see so many people from the local community get behind the club and I hope this continues in the future.

"I wish Connah's Quay Nomads the best of luck for the rest of the season as they look to bring the Irn Bru Cup, Welsh Cup and JD Welsh Premier League title to Deeside."

Jay Catton, director of football, praised players on social media saying they put in a great shift after immense training and preparation.

He wrote: "Bring on the final next month and hopefully we can take as much Deeside and local area support as possible for our very special football club."
