The Bishop of St Asaph has appointed three new Cathedral Canons.

The Rt Revd Gregory Cameron licensed the Canons during a special service in St Asaph Cathedral on Sunday.

The Revd Martin Batchelor, Vicar of Bistre near Buckley and Mission Area Leader of the Borderlands Mission Area has been appointed as a Cursal Canon.

With this title, Martin joined the Cathedral chapter, which coordinates and governs the Cathedral.

The Revd Kate Tiltman, Vicar of Ruabon and Mission Area Leader of Offa Mission Area and the Revd Steve Green, Vicar of St Andrew’s, Garden City near Queensferry have both been appointed Honorary Canons.

Announcing their appointment, Bishop Gregory said: “It’s always good to have the opportunity to affirm the ministry of clergy in the diocese when there is a vacancy on the Cathedral Chapter.

"This distinction is offered to clergy across the diocese who can offer their skills and expertise to our beautiful Cathedral.

“Martin is an outstanding Mission Area Leader and has worked hard to build up his congregation in Bistre. He’s also set up the chaplaincy service at Coleg Cambria and came to the church from an IT background.

“Kate has also been a very successful Mission Area Leader. She’s stepped in to support the ministry of several congregations when they’ve found themselves without a vicar for various reasons.

“Steve is the longest serving cleric in our diocese. He’s been a priest here for 37 years and until recently looked after Licensed Lay Ministry. He’s done excellent work around the Shotton area during his years in ministry.

“I look forward to installing them all as Canons in our Cathedral and celebrating the outstanding ministry of these three priests.”

The Diocese of St Asaph has three levels of Canon. Senior Canons are called Prebendary Canons and used to receive an income for that role. Cursal Canons share responsibility, with the Dean, for the upkeep of and worship at the Cathedral. An Honorary Canon has no governance responsibility for the Cathedral.

The new Canons will be installed tomorrow in St Asaph Cathedral at 3.30pm and everyone is welcome.
