Storm Erik: Wrexham family woken by 40ft tree falling onto house

Aled Davies, who lives on Little Acton Drive, was woken by a noise at around 4am on Saturday morning and when he opened the curtains of his dormer bedroom window, was shocked to discover the branches of an uprooted conifer tree pressed up against the glass.

Mr Davies, who is married with two children, said the tree was one of four that are grouped together at the bottom of his driveway and, despite its size, it seems to have caused a minimal amount of damage to his house.

He said: “I looked out the window and basically all I could see were a load of branches. It’s about forty foot high that tree, but the noise it made wasn’t actually that loud considering it’s so big.

“I can’t tell for sure what damage has been caused until it gets moved obviously, but from the looks of it, it could have been a hell of a lot worse.”

Mr Davies, who has his own plumbing and heating engineering business, said he’s already had several quotes from horticultural businesses to come out and move the tree, but that can’t happen until the insurance company have been out to have a look at it, which won’t be happening until Monday.

He added: “There’s not a lot I can do about it at the moment, I’ve had a couple of quotes from a few firms to come and get it shifted, but they can’t do that until the insurance company have been out to take a look at it.

“I’m hoping it will all get sorted in the next couple of days, because at the moment, I can’t even get off my own driveway to go to work.”

Mr Davies’ children have certainly seen the funny side of what’s happened and will no doubt have a few stories to tell their friends when they go back to school.

He added: “The thing is, that’s obviously just one quarter of the trees that are grouped together. If any of the others had fallen it would have been a lot worse and who knows what damage could have been caused?”
