AXE-WIELDING vandals left a trail of destruction in their wake following an early morning spree of criminal damage in Flintshire.

The incidents occurred in Leeswood in the early hours of Saturday and involved significant damage to a number of cars, police said.

Witnesses spoke of the terrifying moment they woke at 2.30am to see the two perpetrators armed with axes and hammers smashing cars, leaving a trail of devastation.

The vandals struck in in the Bryn Clyd, Ffordd Siarl and Heol Y Goron areas of Leeswood.

The Leader:

Residents told the Leader that there was a collision in Bryn Clyd in the early hours of the morning, followed by a ‘badly damaged’ car believed to belong to the vandals being dumped around the corner at the junction of Charles Road and Heol-y-Goron.

Another car’s windscreen has been left heavily damaged after one of the vandals used an axe to smash a hole through it.

Fred Parry, 58, has lived in Charles Road all his life and said the car with the smashed window belongs to him.

The Leader:

He explained: “I was in my house watching the TV when I heard a commotion outside – there were two lads, one was wielding an axe and the other had a hammer. The one with the axe hit the back window of my car.

“I wasn’t happy but when you see two grown men wielding a hammer and an axe you don’t want a confrontation.

“There was a smashed up car at the end of the road as well.”

Describing the impact the incident has had, he added: “I’ve got to pay an excess of £150 now. It is annoying and it is mindless – I haven’t done anything to them so I don’t know why they have done this to me.”

A police spokesman said: “On Saturday, February 2, we were called at 2.30am to a number of incidents in Leeswood, involving damage to a number of cars.

“Enquiries are now being made and we are looking to identify the perpetrators.”

Mr Parry’s 33-year-old daughter Mandy, who lives in Heol-y-Goron, was at home with her four young children when the incident unfolded.

She said: “A car came up the road and parked on the end of Charles Road. Two lads got out and started smashing it up with some kind of hammer or axe – it was very badly damaged. The front end was smashed in.

The Leader:

“They went down the road and smashed my dad’s window, then they ran up the road and left the car.

“Lots of police came then. I’ve seen some things in Leeswood but nothing like that. It was pretty scary and I didn’t let the children see.”

Around the corner in Bryn Clyd, residents reported seeing a car collide with two parked cars.

One woman, who owns one of the two damaged cars in the Bryn Clyd incident, told the Leader the discovery had come as a shock.

The Leader:

The 50-year-old mum-of-two, who did not want to be named, said: “I heard a big bang and I listened out. It was a while before I looked out but when I did the police were there and I could see my car.

“The police said the car had come down and hit the pavement on the opposite side, then it looks like they have lost control because there was snow on the pavement.

“It was shocking – I don’t want my car to be written off. It is just unbelievable – you think you can park in your road and then something like this happens.”
