MOTORISTS have been warned they face prosecution if they ignore a one-way road system near a Buckley primary school.

North Wales Police issued a reminder to drivers earlier this week about the restrictions in place on Knowle Lane.

The force has confirmed a number of complaints have been received about people driving the wrong way up the one-way system, which passes Mountain Lane school.

A spokesman said: “Officers have been monitoring it and have stopped a number of vehicles.

“We will continue to monitor and issue Traffic Offence Reports.”

On Friday, a spokesman for the force’s south Flintshire team confirmed one driver had been caught driving the wrong way.

The spokesman said: “Traffic offence report (TOR) issued to a driver who contravened the no entry signs on Knowle Lane, Buckley.

“Driver will now likely receive three points on his license and a fine. “The two no-entry signs are clear for all to see, please do not pass the signs as you will face prosecution.”

Later that same day the spokesman added: “After the first contravention of the no entry we had another two in the space of a few minutes.

“Both received TORs but one had no driver’s license or insurance so the vehicle was seized to stop him driving any further.”

Cllr Mike Peers, chair of governors at the school, told the Leader he has raised the one-way issue with Flintshire South inspector Darren Whibberley following many complaints from residents.

Cllr Peers said: “Part of the problem here is at three in the afternoon when parents are arriving with toddlers to get their children, going the right way along the one way, they are met with vehicles going the other way who are breaking the law.

“We certainly don’t want any accidents but there are a lot of people ignoring the signs.

“The worst thing that could happen is a head-on [collision] and we don’t want that.

“I certainly welcome the intervention of the police and I hope people keep reporting and taking photos of vehicles that are being selfish and breaking the law.”

Plans for the one-way system were first unveiled in April last year by Flintshire Council’s streetscene coordinator Mark Edwards at Buckley Town Council.

The installation of the one-way was part of a series of road safety improvements including the resurfacing of a section of Bannell Lane to include the bridge, as well as parts sections of Church Street and Liverpool Road.

Cllr Peers added: “It has all been done for the safety of the children.”
