COVERT cameras could be placed in a town to deter fly-tippers within the next few months.

Shotton councillors received an update on the CCTV at their monthly meeting and they were told the legal issues surrounding GDPR legislation had been resolved.

The model of camera suggested to be suitable will be looked at by Flintshire Council’s IT department for compatibility.

Wayne Jones, of Streetscene, told members: “We have a meeting hopefully in the next two weeks. When we have had confirmation they are okay, we will order them.”

Councillors have been calling for covert cameras to be placed in hotspots area around the town where fly-tipping is a major concern.

The Leader has previously reported numerous issues regarding incidents of fly-tipping and dog fouling across the town and Cllr Mike Evans said he reports issues on a weekly, if not daily basis.

He told the Leader: “I have been campaigning for six years, hopefully we can combat the issues and everyone will live a happy life. I’m optimistic.”

Cllr Evans said they will receive one camera to start with which can be moved to the different hotspot areas.

These include Butler Street, Victoria Road, King George Street car park, Chester Road West and the 33 Club playing field.

He added: “The sooner the better. If you receive a fine of £1,000 you won’t think twice about doing it again.

“If they don’t work then I don’t know what the answer will be.

“Hopefully we will be able to get our town as it used to be and get it back to people respecting it.

“It’s about having pride in your community because we have got a nice town.”
