HMP Berwyn will soon have a new governor, the Ministry of Justice has announced.

The MoJ has selected Nick Leader to run the prison, taking over from the suspended Russ Trent.

Mr Trent was suspended as governor in 2017 pending allegations which are still being investigated.

Before being named the prison’s first governor, Mr Trent, an ex-Royal Marine, was the project director who oversaw its development.

A job advertisement appeared in September for a new person to take on the role stated the salary would pay up to £76,352 as well as payments for unsocial hours.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “Nick Leader has been appointed as the new governor at HMP Berwyn and he will take up his post at the end of April. Nick is currently Director of Sodexo-run HMP Northumberland and also has 25 years of experience within the Prison Service.”

Mr Leader is currently the director of HMP Northumberland, and has worked as at HMPs Reading, Long Lartin, Pentonville, Whitemoor and Peterborough.

The prison is currently being run by interim-governor Danny Kahn until Mr Leader takes up the post on April 29.
