A HUSBAND attacked his wife when the pair locked horns during a fracas at a Wrexham club, a court heard.

Adam Purcell pulled his partner Anne Delaney’s hair and punched her during a furious row at the Penny Black.

The pair were ejected by door staff but continued to brawl outside the club on Abbot Street.

North East Wales Magistrates’ Court was told that Ms Delaney did not want to make a formal complaint against Purcell and said they weren’t in a relationship.

But her husband’s aggressive behaviour was caught on CCTV footage and he admitted assault by beating on October 26 last year when he appeared in court.

Prosecutor Robert Blakemore said: “A man and a woman had been seen in the corner of the club arguing.

“He (Purcell) is seen grabbing her hair and throwing her on a bench and then punching her in the torso. It is possible he may have headbutted her too.

“When the door staff sent them out of the club the CCTV picks them up in Abbot Street where they are seen grappling with each other.”

Purcell was eventually arrested outside, but he gave a no comment interview to police officers and the court was told there didn’t appear to be a reason why trouble had flared between the pair.

Andy Holliday, defending, said the couple had five children and were on a rare night out. He pointed out: “They don’t often have the opportunity to consume alcohol but they went into town following a family event and drunk to excess.

Purcell, 29, of Priestfield Road, Ellesmere Port, was handed a two-year conditional discharge by magistrates and told to pay £85 costs and a victim surcharge of £20.
