A MAJOR supermarket has confirmed it will open near a Wrexham village this summer.

Up to 40 jobs are set to be created at the long-awaited new Aldi store being built on the Ruabon Park Development.

A spokesperson for Aldi said: “Plans for our new store in Ruabon are progressing well and we look forward to opening the store this summer. The new store will create up to 40 new jobs.”

The supermarket is part of a larger development, with outline permission also granted for 319 houses, business units, a pub and hotel.

The Leader: Plans for a new Aldi store in Ruabon, Wrexham

The plans to build the multi-million pound development have been in the pipeline for several years, with them finally being approved in the autumn of last year.

When the plans were first drawn up in 2015 there were fears that such a large development the other side of the A539 dual carriageway could create a divided community, with the new development ‘never being seen part of the village.’ There were also concerns from Cadw, who were worried that any proposed developments would look out of place next to some of the county’s historic monuments.

But it seems that since then these fears have allayed, with Aldi even going as far as to ensure that the miner’s wheel roundabout would be maintained.

The A539 will also be altered as part of the building work, with the installation of a signal controlled crossing, speed limit reduction on the dual carriageway to 30mph and the creation of a footpath into Ruabon, negating any ‘divided community’ effect.
