PLANS to increase capacity at a village primary school look set to be given the green light.

During the autumn, Wrexham Council held a consultation on proposals to create space for a further 105 pupils at Ysgol Bro Alun in Gwersyllt.

The authority said the majority of responses it received were supportive of the changes to the Welsh language primary school.

Cllr Phil Wynn (Ind), lead member for education, said it comes as demand for Welsh medium primary places is projected to grow in Wrexham over the next few years.

He said: “It’s a good news story as there’s a clear demand for primary school Welsh medium places within the west of Wrexham based on the numbers that actually chose to go to Bro Alun as their first preference.

“There is a clear demand and it is a demand that as an authority we wish to meet.

“It’s part of our commitment to expanding Welsh medium education within the authority.

“We’ve had no negative responses back so I think it’s been welcomed by everyone within Gwersyllt and the Welsh language community.

“There were only 14 responses, 13 were positive and one was neutral so on the basis of that response the report will be that we can go out to issuing a statutory notice to increase the school’s capacity.”

Executive board members are set to discuss the plans at a meeting on Tuesday.

A planning application will be submitted at a later date to allow work to be carried out on the building to boost school places by 15 per year group.

It would bring the maximum capacity up to 315, along with 45 nursery spaces.

The increases would start be implemented from September, beginning at nursery and reception level.
