A MAYOR has vowed to continue in his efforts to bring a bank back to his town.

Earlier this year the Leader reported on an announcement that it was preparing to close down its Buckley Branch.

Cllr David Ellis, mayor of Buckley, spoke of his serious concerns about the impact the closure will have, with Lloyds being the town's last actual branch.

He told the Leader a meeting was held between Buckley Town Council and Lloyds Bank following the announcement to discuss the possibility of reversing the decision.

Cllr Ellis said: "They were not interested in staying in Buckley.

"The meeting was very short - it was a commercial decision, much to the annoyance of myself and the town council.

"Banks play an important part in bringing footfall to the town and it is a major inconvenience for people to have to go to Mold to use the bank."

The mayor said he will continue to contact banks as part of his efforts to entice one back to the town.

He said: "I have contacted Santander but I have not heard back yet.

"I went to meet the manager of their Chester branch. I feel we've got the support of businesses and residents to make it a viable success.

"We're trying to be proactive - I'm going to keep pushing and asking the question.

"What we can look at is what we can do to bring other businesses into the town."

Lloyds Bank and Santander have been approached for comment.

A Lloyds Bank spokesperson said: “We always welcome the opportunity to hear the views of the local community. The difficult decision to close this branch was made in response to changing customer behaviours, which resulted in it being used less often. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and customers can continue to access their banking locally by visiting the nearby Post Office.”
