SECURITY has been improved at a primary school following a suspected arson attack.

A CCTV system has been donated to Golftyn Primary school, Connah's Quay, after the outdoor classroom was torched last month and suffered 100 per cent fire damage.

The forest school is a wooden gazebo used by the children to learn more about the outdoor environment, such as den building and how to light fires safely.

Jeannette Williams, leader of the forest school, said: "I think it's more a relief than anything. We're not going to be using it to pick anyone out that is misbehaving, it's going to be prevention more than anything.

"At last we have finally got it there, it puts my mind at rest."

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 12.40am on November 1 to reports of a fire which is believed to have been deliberate ignition. The Deeside incident came two weeks after vandals stole pebbles and threw cement around various parts of the school, of which were to be used for a pebble fundraiser.

The Connah's Quay community rallied together to clean up the mess caused by the fire and local businesses also gave a helping hand.

SDJ Construction workers had dismantled the wreckage and Wates Residential agreed to supply the materials for the new building, which will be installed after the Christmas period.

Jeannette said the money raised will go towards enhancing the security system, which was donated by DB Security Ltd in Shotton.

She added: "The system was donated to us, which we are extremely grateful for, and we are in the process of enhancing it and making it better.

"We are waiting for quotes and hoping to get security lights fitted at the front and all around, that's what we will be using the money for from the donations on the JustGiving page.

"The outdoor building will be put up after Christmas which is a relief. I wanted the CCTV to be installed first so at least we have got that in.

"We want people to be aware that we've got it which will then hopefully stop the vandalising. Then, if something does happen it will be a case of handing it straight over to the police."

Cllr Nathan Jones, governor, said: "I’m really grateful for the kind donation of CCTV equipment by DB Security. I am sure this will make our school a safer place and I hope it will protect the school from any further acts of vandalism in the future."
