A MOTHER is furious her son was excluded from an end-of-year school photograph because he was wearing trainers.

Cameron Williams, 15, was asked to leave the Year 11 photo shoot at Ysgol Bryn Alun in Gwersyllt as he was deemed not to be in full uniform.

His mother, Sarah Williams, claims he has been victimised and she has withdrawn him temporarily from the school.

She says the school’s management have “toughened up” on guidelines on school wear and Cameron has fallen foul of the rules previously.

But she said: “The teachers were in the front row so they were the only ones in the picture whose shoes you could see.

“It really does take the biscuit as it is his last year at school and it was his last opportunity to have a photo with his friends.

“They pulled him off the stand and said he couldn’t be in the picture.

“He was really upset and it is ridiculous as they are taking pictures of faces and not the kids’ feet.

“The trainers are all black, so they look like shoes anyway.”

Ysgol Bryn Alun introduced blazers and ties for its Year Seven to Year 10 pupils in September and issues an information sheet to parents highlighting the school’s uniform code.

Items such as hoodies and cardigans are not allowed, while it advises “school shoes should be black or brown leather (synthetic leather is acceptable)” and states that “trainers, canvas pumps, high heels and Vans” are not acceptable forms of footwear.

While Mrs Williams says she accepts the principles of the rules her son’s school shoes, bought for him in September, are now ripped and she has not had time to replace them.

“Cameron has a disabled sister and my hands are full.

“If I’d known beforehand that the photograph was being done, then I could have gone with him to the shops to get some shoes of his choice,” said Mrs Williams, of Maes-y-Coed, Gwersyllt.

“We are so angry that we have told them he is staying at home.”

Ysgol Bryn Alun headteacher Adele Slinn declined to comment.
