INCREASED safety measures are to be taken on a town road where 109 cars were clocked speeding in a single day.

Caia Park Community Council and Wrexham Council are to work together to try and curb speeding dangers on Hightown Road in Smithfield.

Smithfield County Councillor Adrienne Jeorrett is hoping that a flashing sign can be installed on the 30 miles per hour road, which links the Eagles Meadow roundabout to Hightown and Caia Park.

At this month’s meeting of the community council she said speed monitoring surveys carried out on the road found that many drivers were found to be in the 31-45 miles per hour range, and that on one day, 109 cars were found to be going faster than 30mph.

She said: “Coming into Smithfield from that roundabout, it’s really dangerous so I’m just asking if the council do want to purchase a flashing sign for that road?”

Fellow Smithfield Cllr Jayne Johnson said: “I use the road every morning and it’s a nightmare coming out of Benjamin Road as they (motorists) come down from Eagles Meadow and just shoot down it.”

The Leader:

Queensway Cllr Brian Halley said: “I cross that junction every week in a minibus to go to Cambrian Place.

“The driver has to be very careful as other vehicles come over the brow of that hill like a bat out of hell.”

Clerk Michael Morris said that the work would be carried out by Wrexham Council’s highways team who would look at the best place to put it, and the flashing sign would cost “roughly” £2,000.

Chair of the council, Wynnstay County Cllr Malcolm King said: “It’s hard to think of a better place that would benefit from that.”

The Leader:

Sgt Claire McGrady of North Wales Police, who was also at the meeting, confirmed that there would soon be a police operation looking at speeding and that “Hightown Road will form a part of that”.

Members voted unanimously to support proposals for a 30mph flashing sign on Hightown Road.
