A VOLUNTEER is encouraging more people to learn vital life-saving skills.

Dannii McLaren has volunteered for St John Cymru for three years and she said it is surprising how many people do not know basic first aid.

The Garden City resident helped a woman who had collapsed at Asda in Queensferry on Tuesday afternoon and assisted first aiders until an ambulance arrived.

She told the Leader: “I was shopping at Asda when I heard the announcement and I asked staff if they needed me. A lady was on the floor quite confused.

“I took observations and reassured her as best I could. I kept talking to her to make sure she was okay until the ambulance came.”

A spokesman for the North Wales Ambulance Service confirmed they were called on Tuesday, December 11 at about 4.05pm to an incident outside the store on Aston Road.

Paramedics responded with a Rapid Response Vehicle and one patient was treated at the scene.

Dannii added: “I’m grateful for the training from St John Ambulance, it’s very real so I think a lot of people should learn first aid and know how to help.

“It’s volunteer led, I’m not paid for it but I love being a volunteer. It becomes second nature. I would encourage people to just try and learn some skills because it saves lives.”
