AN artist returned to his home town to showcase his work at a special event.

Jeff Cummins, from Holywell, is best known for his artwork for Doctor Who and he held an exhibition over the weekend at the Stamford Gate Hotel.

Attendees came as far as Birkenhead and Essex to meet Jeff and see his work.

He told the Leader: "I thought it was a nice idea to do and it brought people out of the woodwork. I caught up with people I haven't seen for a long time and a couple of people came from far and wide.

"It was worth having a go to do something like this for the first time locally. I've done conventions before but thought it would be good to come back to my home town."

Jeff left Holywell at the age of 20 to pursue his dreams in London and almost 45 years later decided to return to hold an event in his home town.

The three-day event saw Jeff meet with visitors to talk about his work, from Doctor Who art to Paul McCartney album covers and shared stories from his career, including his art work for Radio Times.

Jeff, aged 64, had a stall at the venue and signed some of his work for visitors, including his painting of the Twelfth Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi.

When asked about being associated with the show, which was relaunched in 2005, he said he was proud.

He added: "It's good I'm quite happy about that because I was a fan from day one and I'm really proud of it.

"It's nice to be associated with something like Doctor Who, I'm not an actor, I can't play anything but I'm part of it. There are people out there that include me in the show, it's inescapable but that's a good thing.

"My aim has always been to try and get my work out there so people can see it and to tick as many boxes as I can."

The artist said he has worked on a range of things from film posters to music videos and encourages people to paint what they like.

He said: "The first professional job I did, I just painted what I liked, my heroes, and sent that work off.

"Do what you like and find the right place for it. You have to work had to pursue this stuff but that's the first step. Follow your dream, give it a go, you'll probably regret not trying it."
